“Choppers are overhead. They’re right on top of us,” Brookes announced frantically.

Kaid listened to the thud, thud, thud of multiple helicopters searching the woods below for them. “The thick foliage should keep them from spotting us visually, but they’ll have infrared. They’ll pick us up.”

“We can’t outrun them,” Victor said. “Once they pinpoint our location, they’ll start shooting.”

“Get everyone out of the Humvee right away.” Kaid lifted Jill into his arms and assisted her from the vehicle while Abby and Kinsley helped the older woman, and Cole and Victor assisted Donald. Kaid ran as fast as possible to put distance from the Humvee.

The whoosh above them confirmed the Humvee was under attack. A second later the explosion launched him into the air with Jill. They both landed some distance away. Jill moaned.

Kaid lifted his weight off her. “Are you okay?”

She slowly nodded. “I think so.”

Kaid rose and looked around. Several of his people had landed nearby. “Everyone okay?” he yelled over the noise of more attacks.

One by one the team answered in the affirmative.

“Let’s get as close to the flames as we can. I’m hoping they’ll not be able to differentiate our body heat from the flames.” Kaid helped Jill to her feet. “Can you walk?”

She didn’t hesitate. “I can.”

They moved as close to the flames as possible while the choppers continued to circle overhead.

“We can’t stay here forever. They’ll find a place to land and check out the scene firsthand.” Which meant they wouldn’t have long to put space between them and the choppers.

Soon, the helicopters banked away from their location.

“Let’s go,” Kaid yelled over the noise of the licking flames. “Once they land, they’ll come here. They may have troops on the way already. Everybody run.” He grabbed Jill’s hand and they ran through the woods. He had only a vague idea where they were heading. Sadly, he couldn’t lead them to where Sidney and the others were hiding. His thoughts went crazy.

Victor and Brookes caught up with him.

“Do we have any idea where this will lead?” Brookes asked.

Kaid recalled the layout of the area he’d seen on the map. “Wasn’t there an old World War Two Air raid shelter somewhere up ahead?” At one time, there had been an estate here that belonged to a wealthy German family. When the attacks took place near Baden-Baden, the family built the air raid shelter to protect them and those who worked for them.

Brookes nodded. “You’re right, there is, though there isn’t much there anymore.”

“It will have to do. Let’s just hope they don’t search it. Once they realize we didn’t die in the explosion, they’ll keep looking for us.”

After they’d covered some space, Kaid stopped to let everyone rest. Jill was struggling to catch her breath.

He told them the plan. The woods were so thick it was impossible to see anything. Kaid grabbed his phone and started walking again. The signal was gone. No doubt Pamphili’s team had shut the service off once more to keep them from reaching out for help.
